Installing my new vise

Senin, 14 Maret 2016

?I bought a vise at Harbor Freight with another 20% off coupon.  Its another one of those small projects that
ended up being more work than I expected.
Its not the best one in the world but it is definitely better than no vise.  I hate having no vises....
The clamping mechanism ended up being a little smaller than I expected.
I placed the vice in position and marked where the lower clamp needed to go in.
The lower mech is 1" wide so I used a 1.25" Forstner bit to make a hole.
I opened the bottom with my cordless jigsaw.
I tried to square it off with my jigsaw and then a file.  I put a corded jigsaw on my Christmas list along with a dado set for my tablesaw.
This is what it looks like from the inside.
I screwed in a piece of 2x4 to brace the part where I cut and to have extra support for where I screw vice down into the top of the workbench.
I predrilled the mounting holes down into the extra 2x4 brace.
Not neccessarily my cleanest install but it will do the job.
I pre drilled the holes into the 2x4 brace but not into the the workbench itself.  This bit shattered when the screw hit the workbench wood.  I drilled out the remaining 3 holes into the workbench and had no more issues.
Installed and ready for use.  I am debating on whether I want to mount some pieces of wood to the inside of the vice or not.  I will probably end up doing it just because I get bored.

Finally 1 Day Passes to Fine Woodworking Live

Jumat, 11 Maret 2016

Last year I would have saved a lot of money if theyd offered 1-day passes to Fine Woodworking Live. It conflicted with my family vacation, and after paying for the whole weekend I had to go home on Friday night.
Im a die hard woodworking conference fanatic, so I knew what I was getting into when I bought the full pass. Still, I would have appreciated saving the $175.00 by only buying a 1-day pass.
Thankfully theyve just announced that 1-day passes are available for Fine Woodworking Live 2013. If youve been holding out because you cant make for the whole event and dont want to pay for the whole event, nows the time to book. Even if you just come for one day youll have a great time learning and hanging out with your woodworking friends (if your one day is Saturday, youll even see me).
Hopefully thell let idiots into the conference in 2013 too.

3 Years On Ive Still Not Found The Ultimate Woodshop

Kamis, 10 Maret 2016

It was three years ago today that I published my first post here, at the Penultimate Woodshop. It was a fairly routine first post. I introduced myself and thanked the online woodworking community.
As I reflect on it, Im now more thankful to the online community than ever. Im thankful for the help, instruction and friendship that Ive received from the community. While woodworking is often a solo activity, I know that sharing it with a community of fellow woodworkers enriches the experience beyond measure.
So please keep woodworking, keep participating and keep sharing. Thank you for reading (you can keep doing that too).

The Mallet is almost done! Finally

Jumat, 12 Februari 2016

I was finally able to work a little bit more on the mallet this past weekend.?  All I need to do now is cut off the excess wood from the wedges and give it a final sanding and then apply some boiled linseed oil and it will be finished!
I made a quick jig to cut the slots for the wedges to go into.
I cut the wedges for the top of the handle at 5 degrees.  Next time I think that I will try 3 or 4 degrees.
5 ended up being just a little too big.
I bought enough wood to make 2 mallets so this is the piece that I am going to
use to make the head of the 2nd mallet.  It is the same species that I used for the handle of
my current mallet.
I bought a drum sander kit at Lowes to shape the handle.  It is amazing what 50 grit sandpaper can do!
I shaped it with the 50 and then smoothed it with 80 and then 120.
It fits in my hand nicely!
I filed the shoulder down a little so that the head would fit snugly and then sanded everything with
the orbital sander with 120 grit sandpaper.
I glued the head onto the handle and then the wedges into the slots.

I finally made some progress on the New Yankee Workshop workbench

Kamis, 04 Februari 2016

I started the workbench build back at the beginning of the year by cutting all the 2x4s down to length.  My wife bought me a dado stack for christmas so I was good to go on the workbench.  It turns out that the dado stck will not fit with the standard insert on my tablesaw.  I was kind of expecting that but I was unable to find any other inserts for my saw on the Skil site so I decided to make my own.  I have been putting if off in favor of other projects but I finally got it done and was able to start using my dado stack.  Correction, I was able to start using 1/2" of my new dado stack.  It turns out that the arbor on my saw will only safely hold 1/2".  Its better than using a sungle blade and I was excited to finally get to use it.  I got all the dados and rabbits for the base frame cut and plan on pre-drilling, screwing, and glueing the base together tomorrow.
I measured and marked all the pieces for their rabbits and dados.
I also marked the fronts of the boards so that I could see where to cut it on the tablesaw.
My homemade insert has a little bit of play in it so I creeped up on the proper cutting depth.
Testing the depth of the cut.
The dados and rabbits for the top of the base frame are done.
I made quite a bit of sawdust and wood chips.
I made a sacrificial fence from some scrap 2x4s.
This is the rabbit for the bottom tool tray.
I had one dado to cut in the long center piece.  My homemade insert was moving around on me a little so I duct taped it down where the clip would be on the normal insert.  The design of the saw is kind of funky and there is no easy choice to make a clip for that section.  I am writing an article on the insert and will explain more there.
More shots of the cut pieces.
I read the directions incorrectly and made this rabbit 3/4" too long.  I cut a new piece of 2x4 and made remade this piece.  Twice.  I got in too much of a hurry and made the rabbit and dado on the same side.  Im glad that I bought an extra 2x4 for this project.
The dados for the dogs need to be cut at a 4 degree angle so I cut a scrap 2x4 at 4 degrees on the mitre saw to use for marking all the cuts.
I marked the cutoff in the center and used it for the width marks.
I used that same block to set the proper angle on the mitre gauge for my table saw.
The slots for the dogs are not perfect but turned out better than expected.
Here is the final dry fit!
